It was as expected - another all-Spanish final will emerge on the last day of the 2012 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. And the top two Spanish players didn't disappoint with world no. 2 Rafael Nadal and world no. 6 David Ferrer both advancing to contest the 2012 Barcelona tennis tournament title. The finals will be broadcast live online here with Nadal and Ferrer meeting for the fourth time in the tournament's history.
Nadal set a repeat of the 2011 final with David Ferrer at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell after dismissing countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-4 in the semi-finals on Saturday. Verdasco was the winner two years ago when then 5-time defending champion Nadal skipped the tournament. In their semi-final, Nadal started strongly sweeping all six games in the first set in less than 30 minutes. Verdasco was able to challenge more in the second set but it wasn't enough as he failed to convert on three break points that he earned. Nadal claimed the straight set victory and he's now through to his 2nd straight final on a clay-court tournament. He beat world #1 Novak Djokovic in the finals of Monte-Carlo last Sunday.
Nadal has now won 76 straight matches on clay in April and he is bidding for his 48th ATP tour title. His opponent will be Ferrer who withstood a barrage from big-hitting Canadian Milos Raonic on Saturday to reach the final of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2012 for the fourth time with a 7-6(2), 7-6(5) victory. Ferrer has a 25-9 event record at this ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tennis tournament after finishing runner-up to Nadal in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The third seed has dropped just one set in his four matches this week, saving three match points against Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals. The 30-year-old Ferrer is chasing an ATP-best fourth title this season, following victories in Auckland and on clay in Buenos Aires and Acapulco. He has a 28-4 season record.
Nadal's quote after reaching the final: "It's even more special to reach a final at home... I enjoy this tournament a lot. Tomorrow I will have to play perfect to have a chance to beat one of best players in the world. I will try to play aggressive and hope David doesn't have one of his best days... Today I played a very strong first set, maybe the best I've had on clay so far this season... To win in Monte-Carlo and to reach a final in Barcelona, no matter what happens tomorrow I have had a great start to clay season."
Ferrer's quote after beating Raonic: "I feel good; it was a very difficult match but I played very solid and consistent... It's my fourth final here which is very difficult to do. Raonic has one of best serves on tour, he's improving a lot and he's still very young. I was very focused during the tie-breaks and played better than him in those moments - that was the key to the match."
Nadal leads Ferrer 13-4 in their career head-to-head matches. See list below:
