July 2012 UPDATE: New ATP world no. 1 and 7-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer leads the list of the top 25 tennis prize money leaders list for 2012. Federer is joined by Australian Open champions Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka as the only players who have broken past the $5 million mark this year. 11 of the top 25 in the list are from the WTA women's tennis tour.

April 2012 UPDATE: Azarenka surpasses $4 million; Djokovic leads Men Prize Money Earners

Top ranked players Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka continue to lead the 2012 year-to-date Prize Money leaders list in the ATP and WTA tennis tours. Djokovic who won the Sony Ericsson Open has won $3.3 million to date, while Azarenka leads the women’s list with $4 million prize money earnings. It is the first time in many years that the top woman earner has earned more than her male counterpart after the first three months of the season. Azarenka has so far won four tournaments including the Australian Open and the Indian Wells tournament which paid a winner’s check of $1 million.

Roger Federer is the #2 earner in the men’s tour with $2.3 million followed by Rafael Nadal with $1.7 million and Andy Murray with $1.1 million. No other male tennis players earned $1 million this year. In the women’s side, Maria Sharapova is #2 with $2.1 million. Sharapova finished runner-up in the top 3 tournaments this year with the biggest prize money – Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami. Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland occupies #3 with $1.7 million in prize money. Only the top 3 earners in the women’s tour have earned more than $1 million so far this season.

Jan 30, 2012 Update: Azarenka, Djokovic lead tennis earners for 2012

As expected, the Australian Open 2012 semifinalists lead the tennis prize money leaders for 2012 in both the men’s and women’s tennis tours. As of today, January 30, 2012 – Victoria Azarenka has earned the most prize money amongst men and women tennis players with $2.5 million so far. Azarenka also won the Sydney International tournament before winning her first Grand Slam in Melbourne. Djokovic leads the men’s tour with his Australian Open 2012 earnings of $2.3 million. Djokovic earned a record $12.6 million last year. Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova join Azarenka and Djokovic as the only other million dollar earners this year. Both players finished as runners-up in the Australian Open 2012 singles tournament.

Sep 12, 2011 Update:

World #1 Novak Djokovic has already broken the record for most prize money won in a single year after capturing his third Grand Slam title of the year at the US Open. Djokovic’s prize money for 2011 now stands at $10.6 million – more than the previous record of $10.2 million which Rafael Nadal won for the 2010 season. Djokovic’s total for the year is more than the sum of the prize money earnings of the #2 and #3 in the list. French Open champion Nadal occupies the second spot and has won $6.3 million so far, while Andy Murray is at #3 and has won $3.5 million. Roger Federer is at #4 with $3 million. David Ferrer rounds the top 5 with earnings of $1.9 million. 11 men tennis players have exceeded the $1 million mark so far. American twins Bob and Mike Bryan are tied at 18th place winning $873,000 – their prize earnings all come from doubles tournaments.

On the women’s side, the 2011 prize money rankings is led by Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova with $3.2 million in earnings. She is closely followed by French Open champion Na Li with less than two thousand dollars separating the two. Maria Sharapova, a Wimbledon finalist is at #3 with $2.8 million while world #1 Caroline Wozniacki is #4 in the list with earnings of $2.8 million. US Open champion Samantha Stosur has prize money earnings of $2.7 million and she rounds out the top five. Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters is at #7 with $2.3 million. 13 women tennis players have exceeded #1 million in prize money in 2011 so far. They include Victoria Azarenka at #6 ($2.6 million), US Open finalist Serena Williams at #8 ($2 million) and French Open finalist Francesca Schiavone at #9 ($1.5 million).
