Sharapova is expected to overtake the Spaniard within the year, and that can also happen right after the US Open if she manages to replicate her Wimbledon success by at least reaching the singles final.

Despite not playing for most of the season, the Williams sisters of Florida, USA still leads the women’s prize money leaders list by commanding margins. 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is #1 with a total haul of $33.4 million, while sister Venus is at #2 with $27.9 million. Venus Williams has won 7 Grand Slam titles including five Wimbledon crowns. At #3 is current US Open champion and 4-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters of Belgium. Eight women’s players have earned more than $20 million in prize money. After the top 5 mentioned above, Martina Navratilova of the USA is at #6 - $21.6 million, recently retired Justine Henin of Belgium is at #7 - $20.8 million, and Martina Hingis of Switzerland is at #8 - $20.1 million. Sharapova is expected to be the next player to join this exclusive list.

Other active players in the top 20 list include Jelena Jankovic of Serbia (#15 - $12.3 million), Vera Zvonareva (#17 – $11.3 million), and Dinara Safina (#19 - $10.6 million). Current world #1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is at #21 with $9.9 million total earnings. She is expected to move into the top 20 within the month by displacing current #20 Jennifer Capriati of the USA who has earned $10.2 million. Kuznetsova is the highest earning player in the list who has not reached the #1 ranking. Dementieva is the highest earning player who has not won a Grand Slam title. Recent first time Grand Slam champions Na Li of China (#36 - $6.5 million) and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic (#58 - $4.4 million) lead these year's prize money rankings.
