Martina Hingis Wedding Pictures

Martina Hingis wedding pictures were published in a German online publication on Monday – December 13, 2010. The SCHWEIZER-ILLUSTRIERTE Online website featured a photo gallery of Martina Hingis and her husband, Thibauld Hutin, some pictures of which were taken during their “secret wedding” in Paris. Hingis, at age 30 is six years older than her husband who is 24. She will retain her family name. They would like to start a family family in a year or two. The couple have indicated that they would like to settle in Switzerland.

The wedding was celebrated by a small family reception held at the Presidential Suite of Paris’s Hotel George V. A wedding banquet is apparently being scheduled for the spring of 2011. The newlyweds are expected to honeymoon in the Maldives.

Hingis and Hutin met at a show-jumping competition in April this year. Hingis has been engaged to marry more than once – first to tennis player Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic and to Swiss attorney Andreas Bieri.

Hingis was a former #1 in women’s tennis and she has lifted 5 Grand Slam trophies including the 1997 Wimbledon title. She retired from professional tennis at the age of 22 in 2002 due to injuries. She made a comeback in 2005 but was forced to retire again in 2007 after a failed drug test. She has won 43 WTA singles titles, and has won nine Grand Slam titles in doubles.

Is the WTA Website Pimping Tennis Stars?

A recent check at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour website show an article published on December 9 that’s titled “Vote for Ana & Maria Now!”. The website is urging visitors to vote for Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic in AskMen.com’s 2010 edition of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women. The said article explains that AskMen.com has “been compiling the Most Desirable Women list since 2001” and that the highest ever rank for a tennis player in the compilation was way back in 2006 when Sharapova received the “honor” of placing in the top 31. The article concludes by providing a link to the AskMen.com website and asking visitors to “push Sharapova or Ivanovic into the Top 30”.

A check on the AskMen.com website reveals scantily clad pictures of ladies with brief one-liners. See below for screenshots taken of the profiles of Sharapova and Ivanovic.

Sharapova and Ivanovic are not the only ladies in the list with links to tennis. Model Brooklyn Decker, Andy Roddick’s wife is also nominated.

Here’s my take on this – it’s enough that AskMen.com “honored” Sharapova and Ivanovic by considering them in the list. However, should the WTA really consider it important to put this as a headline post in their official website? What message are they telling the hundreds of girls that access their website? That being included in such list is an “honorable” thing to aspire for? One only has to check the main page at AskMen.com. The following topics and links are displayed:

– “Sexy Video”
– “Sex Tip of the Day”
– “Where do the Hottest Women Reside”
– “Joke: Extra Large Condoms”

Are these the topics that the WTA want to be associated with? Right now, not only are they associating with it, they’re promoting it. Goodness gracious, stop!

Serena out of Rome 2012 with Injury; Li advances to Finals

Serena Williams pulled out of a scheduled semi-final match against Na Li on Saturday, due to a low back injury allowing the defending French Open champion to reach the finals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012 in Roma, Foro Italico. Serena was riding a career best 17-match win streak on clay having won titles in Charleston and Madrid and was an imminent favorite to win the Rome tennis tournament for the second time in her career. In a press conference, Serena revealed she had “some problems with the lower back” earlier in the week which prompted her decision to withdraw.

Serena played an abbreviated match in the last round when local favorite Flavia Pennetta retired while Serena was ahead 4-0 in the first set. Earlier in the week, Dominika Cibulkova advanced to the quarterfinals when world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament. Read below for the rest of Serena’s press conference after her withdrawal.

Q: What are you thinking about all of the things that are coming up in next months?

WILLIAMS: There is a huge schedule coming up and when a little pain you can’t…. you just want to compensate and I have had a long treatment for the last couple months …….. and so I just want to relax and get ready for next few months. I had a really great time ……

Q: You suffered an injury and had to pull out in Cincinnati. Is this similar to that and is this going to affect your preparation for the French Open.

WILLIAMS: I feel fine. Its just with a lot coming up and this is a good week to get better and I’m confident that I’ll be 100%.

Q: Yesterday was quite a short match. If Flavia hadn’t retired and you had to play a full match would you have retired yesterday.

WILLIAMS: I would have played to see how I felt towards the end of the match and depends on how my back was doing towards the end of the match.

Q: Do you think this problem is related to the special conditions in Madrid?
WILLIAMS: Not at all. Its just life and playing a lot and the body is just getting used to playing a lot of matches and that’s all.

Q: On the injury side your form has been as spectacular. You could have equalled your best ever run if you had ever played today. How do you feel apart form that with the long slog ahead.

WILLIAMS: It feels good and I feel my form is good and hopefully I will be able to do good and stay in form and do well.

Q: Do you have plans for today and tomorrow here in Rome.

WILLIAMS: I love Rome and I might stay today and tomorrow. I mean, I meant to play – I mean to take a day or a couple of day off. I don’t have any plans. I don’t have any plans because my plans were to play tennis.

ATP Tennis Tournaments: April 2012

The ATP tennis tournament calendar for the month of April will feature nine tournaments that will be played in various cities around the world. The month will start with the Davis Cup 2012 quarterfinals with the last eight teams battling for four semifinal spots. Spain will host Austria, France will host the United States, Serbia will be visiting the Czech Republic, and Croatia will be visiting Argentina. Due to their strong player line-ups, Spain and Serbia are favorites to claim semifinal slots.

The biggest April 2012 tennis tournament in the ATP calendar is the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters which starts on April 15. This event has a rich history dating back to 1897. In recent years, world #2 Rafael Nadal has claimed this as his personal playground winning seven straight titles since 2005. In this period, he has beaten Roger Federer in the finals three straight times from 2006 to 2008. He beat current world #1 Novak Djokovic to win the 2009 title.

In the past two years, Nadal claimed victory over fellow Spanish players Fernando Verdasco (2010) and David Ferrer (2011). The last player to win the title before Nadal’s dominance was Guillermo Coria in 2005. Other than Nadal, the past four champions had also been winners at the French Open including Juan Carlos Ferrero, Coria, and Gustavo Kuerten.

The second biggest tennis tournament in April is the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tennis tournament which starts on April 23. This event has also been dominated by Nadal winning six of the last seven titles since 2005. The only other time that Nadal did not win this event was in 2010 when Fernando Verdasco beat Robin Soderling for the title. Nadal beat Ferrer in his last three tournament victories in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

Other tournaments for the month of April will be played in Casablanca, Morocco; Houston, USA; Bucharest, Romania; Munich, German; Belgrade, Serbia; and Estoril, Portugal.
